Dr Payet to speak at top UN environment forum

Seychelles Nation - 20.09.2008

Dr Rolph Payet, special environment adviser to President James Michel, has been invited as lead discussant to a top United Nations meeting next week.

An internationally recognised speaker on climate change and sustainability issues in small island states, Dr Payet was asked by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to take part in the Roundtable on Environmental Sustainability during the high-level event on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), in New York on Thursday September 25.

In his letter of invitation, Mr Ban raises concerns that recent developments such as climate change and soaring food and energy prices threaten the implementation of these eight goals.

The MDGs were set to be achieved by 2015 in response to the world’s main development challenges. They were drawn from the actions and targets contained in the Millennium Declaration adopted by 189 nations and signed by 147 heads of state and government during the UN Millennium Summit in September 2000.

Dr Payet is expected to talk at the New York meeting on adapting to climate change and how it will affect progress in carrying out the Millennium Development Goals in small island states.
