University fund now tops R16m

 Seychelles Nation - 18.09.2008
The Seychelles University fund has received pledges worth R12 million – R10 million from Vijay Patel, R1 million from Joe Albert and R1 million from Airtel.

Minister Dugasse launches the website

The fund previously had R4.5 million in its coffers and now has over R16.5 million after the latest pledges on Tuesday at the Wharf Hotel and Marina, where supporters marked the university foundation’s first anniversary.

One of the supporters, Dr V. Ramadoss, launched the second lottery, which will be drawn just before Christmas with a top prize of R1 million. He also said he will launch the university’s faculty of medicine.

Mr Patel of Vijay Construction becomes the first co-founder of the university and will have the option of naming a building on the campus or having a portrait of his choice displayed in its Hall of Fame.

Mr Albert’s contribution will mainly be in the form of materials.

During Tuesday’s reception, the contributors received a trophy each from university foundation chairman Dr Rolph Payet, who also launched the foundation’s newsletter, which he said will be carried in the next issue of the Seychelles Weekend Nation.

Dr Payet also gave a presentation on the university, in which he showed an artist’s impression of the proposed buildings.

Chairman of the university foundation’s fundraising committee Dr Ramadoss, who gave the first R1 million to the fund, was presented with a trophy, as was representative Andre Esparon of Nouvobanq, which had also contributed R1 million earlier.

Also present were a number of principal secretaries, many of whom were featured on screen as contributors, and other supporters.
